To help our community conserve land with ecological, heritage or agricultural values.

Mountain View County, and all adjacent municipalities (Rocky View County, MD of Bighorn, Clearwater County, Red Deer County, Kneehill County)

Thematic or ecological areas of focus

Legacy Land Trust is currently determining it's conservation themes but generally interested in intact natural vegetation, headwaters, riparian areas, wildlife corridors, heritage lands, and food producing lands.


Donation or sales

Legacy Land Trust will accept donations of conservation easements and land. Depending on the source of funds we may be able to pay for a portion of the gift (split receipt).


Compensation

Legacy Land Trust will provide tax receipts for gifts of properties or conservation easements, cash, split receipts, and, if applicable, additional tax breaks through the Ecological Gifts program.


Minimum parcel size

N/A - each property is assessed on an individual basis.


Associated programs

Legacy Land Trust is committed to using the Alberta's riparian and range health assessment protocols where appropriate. We are supportive of other conservation programs in our partner municipalities including ALUS in Mountain View County. We host regular workshops on a variety of private land conservation topics and are about to embark on "Land Stories"- a project where people can come share their love of the land.


Relationship with landowners

Open communication with landowners is essential to supporting conservation in our region. We want to be partners with landowners in helping them achieve their conservation vision.


Support for landowners

Legacy Land Trust provides assistance with Eco-gift applications, cost-shares the appraisal cost. We also offer a newsletter and education opportunities.


Stewardship activities

HOW OFTEN: Annual monitoring visits

INFORMATION PROVIDED: Landowner or leaseholder will receive an annual report and Legacy Land Trust is available as needed to provide respond to questions


Endowment fund

Legacy Land Trust has a stewardship fund for all properties. Funds are secured from landowners, individual philanthropists, corporations and government grants.


Grazing

Grazing in accordance with a grazing plan determined by the landowner and the land trust is allowed.


Public access on conservation easement lands

This is a decision the landowner will make. Any public access must support the intent of the easement and follow the restrictions and requirements in the document.


Defense fund

Legacy Land Trust is in the process of building a legal defense fund. It also currently has access to in-kind legal resources.
